Cowpeas in South Louisiana

Cowpeas in South Louisiana.

I wanted to share our experience so far with our cowpeas. We did a small disking (we don't have a drill yet) and planted these red ripper cowpeas. We also threw in one lb of Mississippi top pick cowpeas in one place as a trial. We planted around April 18, along with a touch of nitrogen fertilizer, and we harrowed the ground back over it.

This is a new farm to us, and this was our worst-looking pasture. It's around 4 acres.

Today, June 1, they are knee high, and we turned out some cattle on it. Note that there is still quite a bit of perennial grass in here mixed in.

We did this around 4 years ago on a lease and were very pleased with the cattle weight gain.

I'm hoping we will plant another pasture again around late June, to be ready for the summer grass nutritional slump.

We also hope that this will help with the soil health. We know that disking the soil is not ideal, but decided it was the best option for the equipment we have, for this pasture and this planting.
